If buybacks helped draw you into a stock, follow the cash spent to the stake left in your share. From Reddit’s H1 2026 filing, a fixed share’s fraction fell about 0.74%. To judge the reward for your money, examine the purchase price and newly issued ownership too. Reddit 10-Q.
An October 12 public debate questioned whether offsetting employee awards counts as a shareholder return and how to read cash flow with noncash compensation added back. Actual FCF discussion. For a holder who keeps the same shares, the ownership left after a buyback headline matters.
Align repurchases and issuance in the same period
Reddit spent about $240 million on H1 repurchases. The filing’s share ledger gives the total below: 2025-12-31→2026-06-30; A+B; net options/RSUs issuance. B→A conversions cancel.
| Shares | H1 2026 |
|---|---|
| Opening | 190,892,108 |
| Net issuance | +2,952,811 |
| Repurchased | -1,523,502 |
| Closing | 192,321,417 |
The change in a fixed share’s fraction is opening total shares ÷ closing total shares −1. A fraction indexed to 100 at the start ends at 99.257. Share-count growth of about 0.75% and a holder’s fraction decline of about 0.74% have different denominators. This is an economic A+B fraction, distinct from voting power and weighted-average EPS shares; it is not a stock-price return.
Calling the buyback wasted money misses Q2
Total shares fell 89,897 in Q2 2026; a fixed share’s fraction rose about 0.047%. The same filing’s quarterly ledger. Combining H1’s opening with Q2’s flow misses that reversal.
H1 repurchases still offset issuance. Fix net issuance and remove only the buyback: closing shares become 193,844,919. The actual fixed-holder fraction is about 0.79% larger than in that alternative. The company could retain the buyback cash in that alternative; the 0.79% isolates the share-count effect with net issuance fixed. It does not value changes in prices or employee behavior. Continuing net issuance does not erase the ownership that repurchases offset.
Fewer shares leave different value at different prices
Consider a fictional company whose total common-equity valuation INCLUDING cash is $1,000, with 100 shares. The assumed value is $10 per share. Each case spends the same $100 on repurchases while an existing holder keeps exactly one share. Cash leaving brings total equity valuation to $900, holding the other business value fixed. Tax, transaction cost, interest and new issuance are zero.
| Purchase | Shares left | Value / share |
|---|---|---|
| At $10 | 90 | $10.00 |
| At $20 | 95 | $9.47 |
| At $5 | 80 | $11.25 |
Assumed value per remaining share = (initial total equity valuation − cash spent) ÷ (initial shares − shares repurchased). Your ownership fraction increases in every case. Buying at the assumed $10 value leaves $10 per remaining share; buying above it at $20 leaves $9.47; buying below it at $5 leaves $11.25. The cash leaving matters alongside the smaller denominator when asking whether remaining holders became wealthier.
The $1,000 is an assumed equity valuation for this comparison, distinct from observed market capitalization or book equity. Real business value can change, and whether the purchase price was low or high is itself contested. Your purchase price and eventual sale price are also needed for an investment return. The table supplies no fair-value estimate or stock-price forecast for either issuer.
Employee shares can buy a more valuable business
Counting new compensation shares alone misses the reward from growth. Separately from the buyback cases, take a company with $1,000 of total equity value and 100 shares, then issue 10 new shares for employee work. The fraction shrinks, but the additional total equity valuation from that work changes the money represented by a remaining share.
| Value created | Total equity | Value / share |
|---|---|---|
| $0 | $1,000 | $9.09 |
| $100 | $1,100 | $10.00 |
| $150 | $1,150 | $10.45 |
An extra $100 of value leaves 110 shares worth the initial $10 each. An extra $150 leaves $10.45 per share. This additional value is an assumed valuation increase after compensation and business effects, distinct from a cash inflow or measured employee productivity. When valuable people build more than the extra ownership shared with them, existing holders can gain despite more shares.
Reddit’s Q2 release reports $805 million in revenue, up 61% year over year, and $253 million in GAAP net income. Issuer results. Growth alone proves neither an employee-award effect nor an attractive current purchase price. The business is generating more money, which matters alongside dilution when judging the investment.
A cash-flow addback is not free money for your stake
Adding back noncash stock compensation reconciles income to cash flow; it is not another cash payment. Reddit cash-flow statement. Issuing employee shares divides the existing owners’ claim, and offsetting those shares with repurchases needs cash. The accounting expense, new share count and buyback cash are different amounts in that path.
Subtracting every buyback dollar from FCF can offer one perspective. It does not turn the remainder into issuer-defined FCF or a dividend paid to holders. Put business cash, share-count changes and remaining equity valuation alongside each other for the same period to assess the compensation cost and the business reward together.
After the authorization, follow execution and one share
NVIDIA’s September 28 additional $150 billion is a repurchase authorization, distinct from cash holders received or purchases already executed. Authorization sets room for future spending; execution, issuance and the remaining business determine the effect on a held share.
In your company’s next actual 10-Q, align the same-period cash spent, net shares issued, repurchased shares and total shares outstanding. Even with a falling count, ask whether too much cash left at a high price. With a rising count, ask whether earnings and the valuation of future money grew faster. Unexercised awards and issuance plans can also change the next denominator. That evidence changes whether a buyback or compensation plan rewards your held share.
To connect a growing business to money left for shareholders, does selling more HBM leave more profit? separates revenue from earnings. If cash returns appeal to you, continue with monthly distributions versus total money. Cash received alone cannot stand in for the reward in remaining assets.
